Ericsson and eProsima are collaborating together to provide native 5G support for ROS 2 (the Robot Operating System) through its default middleware, Fast DDS.
5G technology, the 5th generation of mobile networks, is a new global wireless standard that provides a connectivity speed that is up to 100 times faster than 4G. This technology is already here for many industries such as e-health, connected vehicles and traffic systems and advanced mobile cloud gaming. 5G is also a reality in the robotics sector, providing cutting edge communications to improve productivity in fields ranging from industrial applications to automotive.
5G technology can be used by any communications middleware as a data link, and ROS 2, the popular framework for building robot applications, is going to work “out of the box” in these networks. Ericsson, a leading company in the 5G field, envisioned a way to enable ROS 2 to use the advanced features of 5G.
To achieve this, Ericsson and eProsima have worked together to enable native ROS 2 support for creating Unique Network Flows. eProsima enabled this feature at Fast DDS level, and worked together with Ericsson to support it in the RMW for ROS 2.
The Unique Network Flows are the different channels used to ensure different QoS settings enabled by the 5G routers, this way users can do things such as reserve bandwidth, ensure guaranteed low latency, etc.
