Hexagon´s Geosystems division, for its project in partnership with Airbus, has selected Fast DDS as the middleware in its project for the near real-time underwater surveillance system.

The project consists of an airplane (C295 MSA, Airbus’ Maritime Surveillance Aircraft) equipped with viewer consoles to display live data collected by two Leica Chiroptera 4X bathymetric LiDAR sensors. The new technology developed by Hexagon enables detection of underwater objects in near real-time, a significant innovation in the airborne bathymetry industry.

The eProsima Fast DDS middleware assures the reliability of the real-time data transport. Furthermore, to accommodate Hexagon’s requirements, eProsima enhanced the Fast DDS’ persistence service to support data samples larger than 65 kB within this project's scope.

This cutting-edge solution was developed to meet Airbus’ requirements and will first be implemented in two C295 MSA purchased by the Irish Air Corps (IAC). The unique object detection feature enables real-time LiDAR data visualisation and analysis during the flight. Being able to locate the precise position of the object allows operators to preview and analyse information captured below water immediately, a process that previously could take up to several days.
