Microsoft, the American tech corporation founded by Bill Gates, chose eProsima Fast DDS as the DDS middleware implementation for their Human Inclusive Robotics Initiative developed for Hololens 2.
Microsoft is doing an active investment in the area of Holographic Robotic Interfaces, developing a Mixed Reality Toolkit for the Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2). This toolkit in combination with the Hololens 2, a pair of mixed reality smartglasses, can be used to interact with robots.
The robots handled via Hololens but also the Hololens 2 itself implement the ROS 2 stack inside a Universal Windows Application (UWP) that is wrapped by Unity. eProsima Fast DDS is the chosen DDS middleware by Microsoft inside ROS 2, in order to make it UWP friendly and to assure the reliability of the real-time data transport.
