ROS 2 and Kubernetes for Smarter Farming
Planet Farms operates multiple vertical farms with ROS 2-powered sensors that track temperature, humidity, lighting, and nutrients. These sensors transmit data to a Kubernetes cluster, where ROS 2 nodes process and analyze information to optimize plant growth and maintain ideal conditions.
Since Kubernetes does not support multicast-based discovery, Planet Farms adopted eProsima’s Discovery Server, a key feature of Vulcanexus, to enable effective DDS communication within the cluster. Because Fast DDS is Vulcanexus's default middleware, this setup allows interoperability between Vulcanexus applications and native Fast DDS ones, creating a unified and efficient data-sharing environment.
