Deutsche Bahn opts for eProsima Fast DDS and Discovery Server within the scope of the Sensors4Rail pilot project and implements this high-performance technology into a S-Bahn Hamburg train equipped with sensors and cameras checking over 28,000 points and a highly accurate localization system for the future development of highly automated and smart rails.
As the digitization continues, driver assistance systems which perceive the surroundings and help to feed a digital map to locate the vehicle and other objects in real-time grow more and more important.
The system architecture adopted by Sensors4Rail is based on the Robot Operating System (ROS 2), a flexible, open-source framework for robot software used by millions of users around the world. The task of the eProsima Fast DDS middleware is to assure the reliability of the real-time data transport while the eProsima Discovery Server allows a quick and optimized discovery of all devices in this complex, distributed heterogeneous system.
The idea is not to substitute any staff members on the train but to rather assist and alert them by diagnosing the incoming information of all the sensors and cameras, and thus prevent accidents, continuously locate the train and guarantee a precise and optimized travel schedule.
ABOUT SENSORS4RAIL PROJECT
The Sensors4Rail is a joint R&D cooperation project of Deutsche Bahn, Siemens Mobility, Bosch, HERE Technologies and Ibeo Automotive Systems. While Deutsche Bahn concentrates on project management, system design, vehicle engineering as well as homologation and safety, the other companies focus on vehicle integration, system testing and localization (Siemens), development of the perception system including sensor and camera integration (Bosch, Ibeo) and on the HD Map in 3D for the live positioning of the train front position and detected objects (HERE).
ABOUT DB
Deutsche Bahn Group (DB Group) is a leading supplier of mobility and logistical services with a clear focus on rail transport in Germany. Its headquarters are in Berlin. About 340,000 employees are employed by DB Group, including over 200,000 in the integrated rail system. By integrating transport and rail infrastructure, as well as through the economically and environmentally intelligent linking of all modes of transport, we move both people and goods.
ABOUT EPROSIMA
eProsima is an SME company focused on networking middleware with special attention to the OMG (Object Management Group) standard called Data Distribution Service for real time systems (DDS). The company’s DDS middleware solutions find special interest in the robotic, IoT and automotive sector, being Fast DDS a middleware implementations for larger robotic systems like ROS 2 and Micro XRCE-DDS the default middleware for micro-ROS, a robot operating system for microcontrollers.
